Christmas is well and truly here and Wangaratta have decorated the streets to celebrate this time of the year, and Thursday December 6th it will be completed with the lighting of the tree ceremony.

Council Spokesperson Steven Burke says it's called "Flick The Switch".

"We want the community to come down and help us flick the switch on the Christmas tree in the Riverside square, on Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 everyone's invited to come along and be part of this great event".

Mr. Burke says it will start at 6.30pm at Riverside Square and have two hours of entertainment before the switch is flicked at 8.25pm.

"We're going to have Christmas crafts and carols for the children, Santa's going to make an appearance, and the new Mayor Dean Rees is going to flick the switch on the tree at 8:25pm".

He says the Christmas Tree has been made bigger this year and council would like everyone to be a part of the night with the new Mayor Dean Rees.

"We've actually made our tree 1 meter higher this year, there's been a lot of Christmas decorations go up around Wangaratta and the Christmas tree right in the Riversida square is at the center of all our celebrations".

It is quickly becoming a tradition, with a visit from Father Christmas.

"It's the second year we've done it and last year we had a really big crowd turn up so we think it's time to do it again".
