Cobram and Wangaratta police assisted Border Force in a raid late last week on a business in Belmore Street Yarrawonga, and across the border in Barooga.

Police say a "substantial" amount of allegedly illegal tobacco, cigarettes and related paraphernalia was seized.

A number of people were questioned, and the investigations are continuing.

"It's something that has raised it's head in the last couple of years," said Detective Sergeant Marcus Boyd, explaining that not paying tax on cigarettes and tobacco is a breach of the customs act.

"Our aim was to disrupt this type of retail selling of cigarettes, so it was a successful day. It just sends a message that we won't tolerate it."
