Karen Chetcuti was abducted from her Whorouly home by her neighbour, Michael Cardamone, on January 12, 2016.

He brutally tortured her and burned her alive, and was sentenced to life without parole in August 2017.

He was the first person in the state's history to receive the harshest possible punishment when they did not have prior murder convictions and pleaded guilty.

The Supreme Court has now ordered him to pay compensation to the late woman's husband Tony, and their children Kate and Jack.

Both children will receive almost $290,000 each, and Tony will receive $240,000.

Police seized the home that Cardamone shared with his mother when he was charged to go towards any compensation claims.

Separate civil action against the state government will return to court in February next year, with the family's lawyer claiming the government showed "gross negligence" in the way they handled Cardamone, who was on parole for rape at the time of the murder.
