Over 6000 people came to pay their respects to past and present service personnel at Wangaratta’s main ANZAC Day service yesterday, with communities taking time to mark the occasion at many other ceremonies across the region.

Wangaratta felt added excitement as veterans, current serving members, families, local students and community organisation members stepped off from the new RSL in Templeton Street to march to the Cenotaph for the 11am ceremony.

Many, including Wangaratta West school captain Riley McIlroy, and Wes Christie, son of World War 2 veteran Jack Christie, embraced the legacy of their forbears and wore their ancestors’ medals with pride, underscoring the continued vitality of the ANZAC tradition and the freedoms our armed forces continue to fight to preserve.

Wangaratta RSL sub-branch president Lt Gen (Retd) Ash Power expressed his delight in how many had turned out for the service, and stressed the importance of handing down the tradition from generation to generation
