O&M Tribunal Hands Down Penalty

There are fears that Wang Rovers star Alex Marklew might miss some finals games, after receiving a tough penalty from the Ovens and Murray tribunal.

Last night, the tribunal found Marklew guilty of breaching the AFL Victoria Country Cybersafety Policy, after he posted a video to Instagram full of expletives and insulting a league umpire who had reported him for striking.

He was handed a four-match ban, two of which were suspended until the end of the 2023 season.

But with the season on hold due to Victoria's lockdown, Marklew faces the possibility of missing finals matches for the Hawks.

Marklew pleaded guilty to the charges, but maintains that he didn't know about the Cybersafety policy.

He has a large social media following, partly due to his regular videos.

Player advocate Paul Squires argued that the video was intended to be humorous, and there wasn't enough education around cybersafety from the league and the club.

He said that Marklew would also face a club-imposed sanction.
