Remembrance Day Service

The Wangaratta RSL will be holding their traditional Remembrance Day Service on Sunday but this year will be recognising the 100th year since the signing of the Armistice.

Committee Member Philip Bright says be aware if you are attending there will be roads blocked.

"For those who are wanting to attend please be aware there are road blocks blocking off the Cenotaph from 9am, there is no cars of vehicles allowed to be traveling past the Cenotaph from that time because it may be a little bigger than normal and may be a lot more people around so we don't want cars and people mixing".

Mr. Bright says it will get underway at 10.45 on Sunday.

"I'd ask for all the public to be there no later than 10:30, there was a view that formalities will start around the 10:45 point. 10:55 or within a minute of that the flag party from 33 Army Cadet Unit and 420 Air force Squadron will be mounting the Cenotaph".

"At 11am for the first time, Holy Trinity Cathedral Bells will chime when that finishes Mr. Kevin Atkinson will be playing the didgeridoo, and we'll have MC being our good Secretary of the RSL Greg Larkin will be talking, obviously we have a bugler and our bugler this year is Miles Hunt from Galen Catholic College".

Philip Bright says the Wangaratta Concert Band will be providing all the backing music.

"Holy Trinity Cathedral Bells will chime, 1 chime for every hour. We have the Wangaratta concert band and they'll be backing all our hymns including our Australian National Anthem, I think it's around 11:45 Rural City of Wangaratta are holding a very interesting picture about welcome home over in the Pac".

Mr Bright also says after the Cenotaph there will be commemorations in the King George V Gardens

"2 O'Clock in King George Gardens Wangaratta concert band is playing a band played Waltzing Matilda which is formally being opened and its also formally being closed by our good President Ash Power".

"At the end of laying the wreaths, so that everybody's aware, I've got volunteers from the RSL who will be walking around with Poppies, if you wish to lay a poppy for a loved one please take one, they are free, please lay it at the Cenotaph when instructed to do so by the MC".

Proceedings will get underway at 10:45.
